GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL LEAVES WORTHY FARM STREWN WITH LITTER
Worthy Farm has been left strewn with litter after the Glastonbury weekend, with hundreds of staff in the process of clearing up cans, cups, vapes and nitrous oxide canisters.
Each year’s clean-up is a mammoth effort and this year, the Other stage – where Idles and The National both took prime time slots – was particularly laden with rubbish.
Revellers have been urged to “love the farm” and take waste away with them but the festival’s peace and love messaging seemed to have been forgotten this Monday morning.
Andy Rock, 55, from west Somerset, team leader for litter pickers on the Pyramid Stage, said on Monday: “There’s about 300 staff down here this morning, and they all got up early in the morning to pick the litter to clear up from last night.
“They’ve been doing that for the last four days and every morning it’s a bit messy in the morning, but this place is absolutely spotless by about 10-11 o’clock.”
He said “nothing particularly unsavoury” had been found, but added: “I think somebody did leave behind some high-heeled crocodile skin shoes yesterday, but that was the strangest thing we found.
“I’m not sure why anybody brought those to Glastonbury, but mainly it’s the stuff you see around us. It’s cans, bottles, paper cups, and virtually everything we pick up gets recycled.”
The clean-up got under way just as campers were leaving Somerset and making their way home. Those wishing to get back in a hurry were advised to leave between midnight and 7am to avoid traffic jams, with anyone heading off after American singer SZA closed the Pyramid Stage urged to exercise caution.
Disruption is still expected along routes to London due to badly marked diversions through the countryside, in which both Stonehenge and Porton Down are set.
