YACHT SINKS ON ITS MOORING IN CHRISTCHURCH’S LYTTELTON HARBOUR

A yacht sank overnight on Monday in Lyttelton Harbour near Christchurch.

The vessel was moored in Cass Bay.

An Environment Canterbury spokesperson said the harbourmaster was aware of the incident.

They said salvage attempts were made but worsening weather made it too dangerous to continue.

Although there was some diesel on board, less than 20l, no spillages have been observed so far.

“The exact cause is unknown. The vessel was taking on water and noticeably low in the water when salvage was first attempted,” the Environment Canterbury spokesperson said.

“The team are collecting debris that has been washed ashore daily.”

Once conditions are safe again, salvage operations will continue.
