SERIOUS CRASH: LANES NOW REOPENED AFTER HORROR CRASH BEFORE AUCKLAND HARBOUR BRIDGE, DRIVER CRITICAL

All southbound lanes along State Highway 1 leading onto the Auckland Harbour Bridge have now been reopened after a van and truck collided this afternoon.

The crash was about 3.30pm after the Onewa Road off-ramp.

The van driver has critical injuries.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the Serious Crash Unit carried out a scene examination.

All three south-bound lanes were closed near the crash site for several hours, before they were reopened around shortly after 6.30pm.

Fire and Emergency sent three trucks and extracted one person from the wreck.

The person was critically injured after the van they were driving rear-ended a truck which had slowed down due to slow traffic along with other vehicles in the run-up to the Harbour Bridge.

Despite other cars in the lane slowing down, an eye-witness said the van driver didn’t appear to see the slowed traffic up ahead and only applied their vehicle’s brakes shortly before impact.

Traffic was being diverted at the Onewa Road off-ramp, to rejoin State Highway 1 via the Onewa Road on-ramp.

Police warn commuters should expect delays.

A St John spokesperson said they were notified at 3.30pm and an ambulance and rapid response vehicle were at the scene.
