HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RESCUED AFTER GETTING LOST ON TRAMPING TRIP

A group of high school students have been rescued after getting lost while tramping on Auckland's West Coast.

Aged 16 to 17 years old, the group of five started their planned overnight trip from Piha on Monday. However, teachers raised the alarm when they didn't arrive at the end of the trail as planned in Whatipu on Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called shortly after 6:30pm on Tuesday and LandSAR, the Police Air Support Unit and Eagle Helicopter responded and located the group just after midnight.

A police spokesperson said the students were safely rescued from the bush area near Whatipu overnight.

The group has since been taken to safety and no injuries were reported, the spokesperson said.
