VICTORIA STARMER AND RISHI SUNAK'S WIFE AKSHATA MURTY'S ELECTION LOOKS AND THEIR HIDDEN MEANINGS

The UK has a new Prime Minister - another man - and a new 'First Lady' currently moving into 10 Downing Street and making themselves at home.

Sir Keir Starmer become the country's 57th Prime Minister overnight, as Britain sent a message to the outgoing Tory government at the polls after 14 years of Conservative rule.

Conservative Party leader and outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak kept his seat Richmond and Northallerton, but the millionaire, his wife Akshata Murty and their children have been given the boot and have vacated 10 Downing Street.

As Starmer and his wife Lady Victoria get settled into their new home with their kids, we take a look at how the new 'First Lady' and her predecessor handled their husbands respective victories and defeats overnight - and what they wore for those all important speeches.

First Lady in Red - Victoria Starmer

As Keir Starmer took his first steps as the nation's new Prime Minister, his wife Lady Victoria Starmer turned heads in a stunning Labour red midi dress. The couple walked arm in arm into number 10 Downing Street, with Victoria looking every bit the stylish PM's wife.

After a resounding victory for Labour, Lady Victoria made her debut on Downing Street in a chic split-shoulder dress from fashion label ME+EM. The mother of two looked elegant in the Contrast Stitch Midi Dress, which is priced at £275. The vibrant poppy red dress, crafted from crease-resistant fabric, was an apt choice for such a significant occasion. It's perfect for all-day wear or for events where you'll be photographed - like a wedding or, indeed, your entrance to Downing Street.

The dress features a comfortable elasticated waistline that ME+EM says offers a 'flattering' fit. Practical pockets add functionality without adding bulk. The hook and eye fastening allows for an adjustable neckline, while the short sleeves with split detail add movement and lightly cover the upper arms.

The dress, which falls to a midi length, is modelled by a 5'10" tall model online, so it may be longer for those of shorter stature. It's available in sizes 6-18, with ME+EM advising customers to stick to their usual size. The 49-year-old looked chic pairing the dress with heels, sling backs, which elevated her overall look.

Akshata Murty's scene-stealing brolly

Akshata Murty also rocked a chic dress for her husband's big speech outside 10 Downing Street this morning, as Sunak delivered his humiliating resignation speech after leading the Tories to a historic and crushing defeat in the 2024 General Election. Akshata's high-neck, long-sleeve dress was mainly blue and white, with a top section featuring downward-pointing arrows but with a splash of red at toward the hem of the gown.

Social media users have likened Akshata's dress to a metaphor for how the election has unfolded for her husband and the rest of the Conservative Party. "Dazzle camouflage is supposed to disguise a vessel's direction and speed, but it doesn't always work," one wrote on Twitter, "In the case of Rishi Sunak's wife here it's obvious the answers are 'out of Number 10' and 'right now'."

"Even Rishi Sunaks wife's dress says you're going down !! #Rishi_Sunak #AkshataMurty," another quipped as they shared a still from Sunak's speech on social media. A third added: "Sunak’s wife wearing a dress that represents the Tory vote in the #GeneralElection2024."

Other viewers were distracted by Akshata's accessories rather than her stripy dress. Braving the rainy weather this morning, Akshata stood by his side with an umbrella in her hand. Humiliated just a few weeks prior when he had to announce General Election standing under heavy downpour without any cover, Sunak found comfort with his poised partner holding an umbrella this time around.

The standby umbrella held by Akshata's sparked curiosity among spectators, provoking their instant reactions on social media. One bemused user wrote on Twitter (X): "Rishi Sunak's wife waiting in the wings holding an umbrella is killing me," while another observed: "Rishi Sunak leaving Downing Street. Note the umbrella. Not making that mistake again, so he has learned SOMETHING."

Cathy Newman of Channel 4 News posted a snapshot of Akshata grasping the umbrella on Twitter with a caption: "Taking no chances with the weather..." GB News' Christopher Hope could hardly resist pointing out, "Rishi Sunak has learned his lesson! If the heavens open again as he speaks outside 10 Downing St, a man is ready with an umbrella."
